Thinking About Spring

March is here, which means Spring is around the corner. Well, in northern Canada, that corner is still quite far away. We won't see green until May probably, but I will be welcoming Spring into my life with my art and calligraphy. Here is the word art I created for Instagram at the beginning of the month. If you would like to download it and print it for yourself, click HERE for the link.
With the theme of St. Patrick's Day, I designed this card for Creative Scrapbooker magazine using Chameleon Pens for lettering and colouring. Faux calligraphy is a lot of fun to do when you color the interior white spaces of those downstrokes. Click HERE to see the tutorial of how I made this card on the Creative Scrapbooker blog.
I sketched the lettering and shamrock first on heavyweight white cardstock with pencil and then I traced with the black detail Chameleon pen as the final design. After I colored it, I added dots and a bow to the shamrock.
My biggest bit of news for you (if you don't already know) is I just finished my manuscript for my upcoming instructional book about brush lettering! This is absolutely a dream come true, and I can't wait for the Fall when it will be released. I will let all of you know when it is up on Amazon for pre-order. SO EXCITED!
This year I also decided to focus on supporting charitable organizations and raising awareness for a variety of causes. This month I am collaborating with Starfish Project, which is a non-profit organization with a social enterprise that cares for women coming out of human trafficking and exploitation in Asia. They make and sell jewelry to raise funds for their cause. Together we will host a giveaway on Instagram @kellycreates and I will offer up an original print of this illustration I drew to commemorate International Women's Day on March 8. This digital print and more will be in my website Shop soon, with proceeds going to Starfish Project.
PEN OF THE MONTH: Jane Davenport is an artist from Australia who has collaborated with American Crafts USA to produce her own line of art supplies called "The Color Institute". I was so excited when she contacted me and kindly sent me her new Mermaid Markers and paint pens. The Mermaid Markers are water brushes filled with watercolor and they are PERFECT to use with my Watercolor Worksheets. Click HERE to read my blog post about these beautiful Mermaid Markers.

Here is my YouTube video with a demo of these Mermaid Markers.
On Instagram I also had a water and ocean theme going on and did lettering of words and quotes along with using some watercolor. You will probably see more of my watercolor art and letters in future newsletters and posts.

TIP OF THE MONTH: If you're just learning flourishing, practice lots with a pencil. Then follow your pencil lines with your brush tip pen WITHOUT any pressure. Keep your lines light and add pressure AFTER you have mastered the flourish shape.
March is also a special month for our family because March 15 is Finn's "Gotcha Day"! This guy gets into a lot of trouble...and loves to chew on my pens...but we love him so much and can't imagine a day without him.
If you're a fan of brush lettering, then you probably have heard of Molly, the artist behind Poppy & Mint Design. Her hilarious sense of humor shows in her whimsical illustrations and stylistic letter forms. Not only does she run a stellar calligraphy business, she just had a baby...welcoming Hope into their family of 3.
Supporting small businesses and artists is something I highly value, and I encourage you to visit Molly's website to take a look at all the wonderful products that are filled with her signature lettering style. Bring your love of lettering into your home with one of Molly's cups or prints! Click HERE to visit her website and learn more.
If you haven't already heard, I will be traveling to North Carolina to present a 2-day workshop at Donna Downey's studio. I am so excited about dedicating an entire weekend to the art form of calligraphy. If you want a weekend away or live in the area, join me and relax with brush lettering!  Click HERE to learn more and register.

Basic Flourishes: waves, swashes and loops

This month, we will practice tracing waves, curls, swashes and loops to add some beautiful lines to our lettering using small brush pens. Start with a pencil, then use a small brush pen, and finally draw these flourishes freehand. Add pressure after you have mastered the shapes. Remember that practicing with a pencil or regular pen is an excellent way to build up control and muscle memory.
