Hi everyone,

Our Commander in Chief Lina Timm is on vacation AGAIN, and since Tilman Wagner is swamped with work – I got the honor of carrying on the newsletter duty this week.

Vine is dead – long live Vine! Some were sad by the news, others thought Vine was already long overdue. One thing that most of us seem to agree on is the heavy mismanagement of Twitter, even after Jack Dorsey took over again.

Did you read Politico's article "What If the Newspaper Industry Made a Colossal Mistake"? Some of us did – and found it hilarious/outrageous in some ways.

Also, we have been discussing ad blockers and what the best way is to convince your audience not to use them (and on a side note; the discussion about ad blockers sparked a meta discussion about A/B tests). So far, many think that the results recently presented by Financial Times is fairly accurate, and has even reached similar results.

Oh, and we've decided to add a new feature to the newsletter: QUOTE OF THE MONTH. Ausgezeichnet! ;)

Rock on & read you in Slack!
Henrik

What If Politico Made a Colossal Mistake When They Published ”What If the Newspaper Industry Made a Colossal Mistake?”
  • Politico's article What If the Newspaper Industry Made a Colossal Mistake? sparked a (very one-sided) discussion about printed newspapers. @simon pretty much nailed it by quoting Ben Thompson, who himself nailed it with just two sentences: ”The flaw in this reasoning should be obvious to any long-time Stratechery reader: people in the pre-Internet era didn’t read local newspapers because holding an unwieldy ink-staining piece of flimsy newsprint was particularly enjoyable; people read local newspapers because it was the only option.”

Audio version of articles, Twitter for audio – and improved German
  • Just listen, not read? In other words: Should publishers always provide an audio version of their articles, alongside the text? There was a discussion in die #audio section about this, because audio lovers obviously like the spoken word. Some of us tested reading app’s like @Voice or Play (for Medium). And with Amazon’s Echo and Google Home coming into stores and living rooms, there are news opportunities and challenges for both consumers and publishers.
  • In addition, @martinoswald and @henrik.stahl had a short exchange about Anchor, an app that describes itself as a “Twitter for audio”. It uses the spoken word, gives a time limit and encourages users to talk to each other. @henrik.stahl: “It’s obviously a bit time-consuming, but it’s very ‘untrolly’ compared to Twitter.”
  • And finally, @martinhoffmann is encouraging all of you to improve your German and download his Resi app. ;-)

How do we convince our audience not to use ad blockers?
  • We have been discussing ad blockers and what the best way is to convince your audience not to use them. The discussion sparked after @henrik.stahl asked if newsrooms are working with A/B tests and for what cases they are usable. @javier_vasquez gave us a look into what the ab testing showed when adapted to a soft paywall to demotivate the use of adblockers for news websites. Please join us in the discussion.

New features + broadcasting licenses for live streams

Facebook has added a bunch of new features lately:

Also, flight_1 is asking what you know and think about broadcasting licences for live streams. ”In Germany,” she says, ”if you make an announcement that you plan to go live, officially you would need a licence to do that. So here, no private user nor websites or print media could use the new feature to schedule live videos.”

Have some insights on the matter? Let us know!

Announcing Spectrm and Feels
  • The German chatbot startup Spectrm wants to help publishers reach larger audiences. "When talking about distributed media, one should not only think of sending out links to customers. So it will be interesting to see how Spectrm evolves over time," says Channel Rockstar @martinhoffman. What are your thoughts?
  • The Washington Post announced “Feels” – a bot experiment on Messenger that tracks user feelings during the last three weeks of the 2016 presidential race. Should be a lot of opportunities for these kind of votings in messaging apps, right?

VR headsets on Kickstarter, reading magazines on a headset, and interesting new VR pieces
  • The startup Onix plans to come up with its own VR headset called Pulsar VR. The specs (4k res, 120Hz refresh rate, works wireless) sound interesting – but it’s quite some way to go: The team wants to launch a kickstarter campaign. So we’ll have to wait and see if they’re successful (and if so, whether they are able to reach their goals).
  • Reading a magazine with a headset? If you ever tried the HTC Vive you probably won’t ever think of it as this headset is pretty heavy (at least to me). Nevertheless, HTC launched the app Vivepaper. E.g. you’ll be surrounded by 360° images or videos while reading.
  • Besides, we had some suggestions for interesting new VR pieces, such as the show “VRtually There” from USA Today and Youtube.
