We Have to Do It. We Have to Ask You for Money so that We Can Continue to Touch Lives across the Philadelphia Region.

We asked a group of 7th graders in our North Stars arts education program, who created an awesome portrait of James Baldwin, to describe our teaching artist, Scott Bickmore, with whom they had spent several months. Their responses: Patient. Creative. Fun. Awesome. One student, Hassan, said, “This program has made me more creative in everything I do. I hope Art Sanctuary will be at my next school.”
Those young people and our teaching artists embody our mission to use the power of black art to transform individuals, create and build community and foster cultural understanding. Most of our programming is free to the people we serve, but it is quite expensive to deliver quality education and programming.

Donations make up over 80% of our budget each year, and every gift matters to the families we help, so we're writing to you today to ask for your support.
Art Sanctuary continues to live through these challenging financial times. Gifts from corporations, foundations, and government agencies are harder to come by, yet the need for our work grows. Gifts from people like you who value the role we play in Philadelphia’s most economically challenged neighborhoods make the difference. Your gift today will help to ensure that Art Sanctuary continues to meet the needs in the communities we serve and truly change lives for the better.
Art Sanctuary is dedicated to bringing Philadelphians together through the unique community-building power of black art. From delivering arts education to pre K – 12th graders each month, to producing one of the longest running literary festivals, Celebration of Black Arts, to exhibiting emerging and internationally-renowned visual artists in our gallery, we are able to touch thousands each year, providing positive images and cultural esteem.

We passionately celebrate diversity through the arts, understanding the unparalleled strength we gain by embracing our cultural differences, and we use this strength to provide opportunities where they do not exist. While Philadelphia schools are underfunded and inner city neighborhoods underserved, we are here to make certain the transformative influence of black art is strong in our communities. But, we cannot do it without you!
