We look forward to welcoming you to LSE in a few weeks. This email forms the first of two important emails which are aimed at guiding you through your first weeks at LSE. Please read them carefully. This email covers Registration, Welcome Week, Online Resources and Student Reps.

Welcome from your Programme Director

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Department of Geography and Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Congratulations on your acceptance at one of the world’s leading social science institutions.

Whilst at the LSE, you will take core courses which provide a critical grounding in the processes, instruments and outcomes of environmental policy and regulation, as well as help you better understand the nature, measurement and management of sustainability. You will also have the opportunity to undertake optional courses that allow you to specialise in various aspects of appraisal, regulation and environmental governance.

If you want to do any reading prior to arriving at the LSE, then I would recommend Roberts, J. (2010) Environmental policy, Second edition, Routledge, ISBN-10: 041549785X. The book provides a basic introduction to some of the themes addressed in your core courses.

You might also wish to consult any of the following:

Bell, S. and D. McGillivray (2013) Environmental law, Eighth edition, Oxford University Press, ISBN-10: 0199583803.
Neumayer, E. (2013) Weak versus strong sustainability: Exploring the limits of two opposing paradigms, Fourth edition, Edward Elgar, ISBN-10: 1848448732.
Pearce, D. and E. B. Barbier (2000) Blueprint for a sustainable economy, Routledge, ISBN-10: 1853835153 (this book is especially useful for individuals with no prior knowledge of economics/environmental economics).

Please note, preparatory reading is not required, and you will be able to follow the programme and pass the exams if you start with your readings in late September.

School Welcome Meeting

You are advised to attend the LSE Welcome presentation for new Geography and Environment students. This is scheduled to take place on Monday 19 September 2016 at 3pm – 4.30pm in the Peacock Theatre, Portugal Street.

This is your opportunity to learn about the LSE community, including valuable information about the wealth of support available to you whilst studying at LSE.

Registration

Registration for new MSc EPR students will take place in the Hong Kong Theatre (Ground Floor, Clement House) on Tuesday 20 September 2016 between 12 noon and 12.30pm.

Departmental Welcome Meetings

Departmental Welcome and Support Services Introduction
Wednesday 21 September 2016, 10am – 2pm
Room: NAB.LG.08 (New Academic Building, Sheikh Zayed Theatre)

An opportunity to meet staff within the Department along with the support services available to help you through your studies at LSE. This is an important meeting and we strongly advise you to attend.

MSc EPR Programme Induction
Thursday 22 September 2016, 10am - 12pm
Room: PAR 203 (Parish Hall)

Each programme has its own welcome meeting. This is the most important meeting of Welcome Week and attendance is compulsory.

All MSc students are welcomed and encouraged to attend our Departmental gathering:

Online Resources

LSE for You

LSE for You is a personalised web portal which gives you access to a range of services including Graduate Course Choices, Personal Timetables, Examination Timetables and Provisional Examination Results. You can print off your proof of registration under the ‘Certification and Documentation’ section.

Moodle

Moodle is LSE's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Each course has a dedicated Moodle page. Moodle is used for posting lecture notes, seminar notes and student presentations, as well as submitting essays and dissertations. Moodle is an important resource and should be visited regularly to obtain course information. Guides and information on using Moodle can be found here.

ReadingLists@LSE

Most reading lists are hosted on the ReadingList@LSE library platform. Reading lists are usually linked directly from the relevant Moodle course pages. Reading lists are arranged by Term and are usually split into weekly readings for both lectures and seminars, with links to online journals or other relevant library resources.

Student reps

Each MSc programme requires student representation at Staff-Student Liaison Committee meetings. These meetings serve to inform the Department about what we're doing well and any improvements we could make. Student reps are important and ensure that the voices of your fellow students are heard.

The rep position requires some Student Union-led training and carries additional Departmental duties such as maintaining a social media presence for your programme and sharing information on Departmental events.

If you're interested in being the Student Representative for your programme please email your Graduate Administrator before Monday 19 September 2016. If required, an election will be held in Michaelmas Term.
