Welcome from the Director of Postgraduate Studies
I am writing to congratulate you on being offered a place/visiting position on one of the PhD programmes here at Department of Geography and Environment of the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The Department is distinctive as it concentrates on the socio-economic aspects of geography, places great emphasis on multi-disciplinary research and focuses strongly on policy relevant work.
As exemplified by the recent REF-2014 results, the quality of research carried out at the Department is extremely high: 84% of research outputs were assessed as world-leading (4*: 34%) or internationally excellent (3*: 50%). The Department was ranked 1st in Outputs and 4th Overall in the Official HEFCE Rankings Summary and in the THE League Tables.
The Department’s research excellence finds further demonstration in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016, where the Department is ranked 4th in the world.
The staff expertise and experience behind these outputs directly feeds into the doctoral training, including course teaching, research supervision and research seminar participation.
Throughout your stay at the LSE, you will be able to talk to me about concerns and questions you might have about your doctoral studies. Before then, and if you have any queries, please feel free to email me at o.silva@lse.ac.uk.
Dr Olmo Silva
