REshape Newsletter #2/17

"You can't use an old map to explore a new world"

- Albert Einstein

At REshape we love the unknown and so explore new worlds. Together with our astronauts, the REshape Fellows, we're heading to new directions in health(care).

We're very proud to have a new team member in 2017 who's coming from MaRS so she is already know with new unexplored areas. She'll introduce herself in this newsletter. We also like to announce the REshape European Center for Healthcare Design a collaboration together with our partner Growtivity.

- The REshape Team

She's coming from MaRS

'Innovation Sherpa in Chief' Zayna Khayat will be joining us for the coming year. Zayna has worked at the MaRS Innovation Center in Canada for the last 5 years. MaRS Innovation is a non-profit organization that acts on behalf of our members–15 of Toronto’s top universities, institutions and research institutes, plus the MaRS Discovery District–to bring their most promising research breakthroughs to market. Their startup clients have created 6,500 jobs and, in the last three years alone, they have raised $1 billion in capital and generated $500 million in revenue.

Don't forget to follow @ZaynaKhayat and @MaRSDD on Twitter and click the link below to learn more about MaRS, Zayna and what she will be doing in the coming months.

AIR: Ambition, Innovation & Results

There's so much to learn from different fields of work. That's why we did our counter-visit to the innovation centers of the Dutch Airforce, Navy and Army. It's interesting to see so many similarities with our own approach in the way they achieve impact & inspire others to get into action mode. We're curious what this new connection might bring.

European Center for Healthcare Design

This year we will co-create the “REshape European Center for Healthcare Design” together with Growtivity. European since we think in this globalising world everything should at least be bi-lingual, the investments that are needed are most often too big for the Dutch market and last but not least we’re increasingly working on a global level to improve global health.

Our Astronauts

Last year we started with the REshape Fellows. A group of colleagues that work in healthcare, research, IT, industrial design and science and work at REshape for 1 day of their workweek. We call them our astronauts because they are working on cutting edge innovation and are some the front runners in our organisation.

REshape Interns

Our REshape interns are as diverse as our own team. Each half year we have a new batch with backgrounds ranging from Biomedical Science to Communication & Multimedia Design. They bring fresh insights and enthusiasm to the team and help us achieve a bigger impact on health(care).

Using Virtual Reality for training purposes is booming at the moment, VR is used to train people in surgical procedures, first aid and other medical proceedings. But is it the best way to teach? Enter Paul, born just 27 weeks old, Paul is the world's first high emotion preterm simulator. This simulated premature infant will help healthcare simulation training programs better educate for the critical care of preemie babies.

Dutch Hacking Health 2017

Dutch Hacking Health will be organized in the weekend of 19th – 21st of May. It is an event where technology, design, entrepreneurship, healthcare and patients are brought together during a weekend. Hacking Health aims to transform healthcare by connecting teams, which usually rarely collaborate, who search for human-centric solutions to front-line healthcare problems.

Hacking Health Valley (Nijmegen)

Together with the cities of Groningen, Leiden, Maastricht and Utrecht we'll once again host a hackathon in Nijmegen. This year our name has changed to Hacking Health Valley, matching the goal we have to work together as an ecosystem in Health Valley. Check out the website to get your ticket and read more about the program & to see some materials from last year.

Have you hacked (your) healthcare?

Patients hacked an insulin pump so that the pump manages the insuline dosages automatically, based on glucose levels that a sensor is measuring. We're collecting examples of patients and family members 'hacking' their own healthcare to make their life easier.
