Quarterly Report 032016

Dear Golden Eagles,
Jerry Zacharias passed on the news that two Golden Eagles, John Glenn and Bob Schumaker, were honored with the 2016 “Lone Sailor Award,” which is given to Sea Service veterans who have excelled with distinction in their respective careers during or after the service. They join an impressive list of men and women who have distinguished themselves by drawing upon their military experience to become successful in their subsequent careers and lives, while exemplifying the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.

Ed Clexton passed on the news that Tom Hudner, Golden Eagle and Medal of Honor recipient, was honored on his 92nd birthday by 50 Petty Officers from USS Constitution who came to his home in Concord, Massachusetts, and sang Happy Birthday and the Navy Hymn for him.

Don Boecker passed on this very sad news:
“My youngest of four daughters, Dione Boecker, age 47, died unexpectedly in Virginia Beach on 18 August 2016. A fine athlete, she was a varsity soccer player as a freshman at North Carolina State University where she had her first bipolar episode. Over the next 30 years, she was hospitalized for depression or mania many times. For 13 of those years, her illness was in remission, and she excelled at wonderful sales jobs and raised a daughter who is now 21 years old. About 18 months ago her bipolar disease returned, and she became manic, followed by depressed episodes. At her death she was manic. The results of her autopsy have not been released. Her death was a very sad event for our family and her disease is a terrible one that is very difficult to control. Sadly, Don Boecker.”

WEST FLIGHT:
Duster and his team are on top of planning for the 27-30 April 2017 reunion at the Westgate Hotel in downtown San Diego.

Dean “Diz” Laird, an Ace and the only naval aviator to have shot down both German and Japanese planes during WW II, flew his 100th different make/model of aircraft this last July. Diz and LCDR Nicole Johnson, a fleet replacement instructor pilot with the “Flying Eagles” of Strike Fighter Squadron 122, took a T-34C Turbomentor for a spin. Diz said, “I want to thank everyone who took a part in making this happen. When I found out I was going to be able to do this, I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it.”

CENTRAL FLIGHT:
Ras passes that Central Flight is discussing a mini-reunion in November during the week of the 14th in Biloxi, Mississippi. Two days/nights with the usual activities associated with Biloxi.

NORTHEAST FLIGHT:
Black passes that it has been a slow summer at Arlington, which is very good news. Several Golden Eagles participated as honorary Pallbearers at the memorial service for Scott Gray in Annapolis, Maryland. He will be buried at Arlington on 15 November.

Northeast has deferred its next 2018 reunion planning meeting until November.

SOUTHEAST FLIGHT:
Wild Bill McCamy has put together a mini-reunion to be held on 24-26 October in historic Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Folks will be staying at the Green Park Inn and among the many events is a trek up the mountain to enjoy a Welcome Aboard cocktail party/buffet dinner at the home of Gary and Beverly Vangysel. There is even a bad weather plan that takes the event to the home of Jim and Bonnie Amos who are co-hosting the event. Events include golf and kayaking, followed by a membership meeting and the reunion dinner at the Green Park Inn.

Semper Fidelis,
Howard DeCastro – Pilot
