Weekly Digest - 10 January 2017

Dear <<First Name>>

Happy New Year and welcome to the first Network Digest of 2017.

So what will 2017 money is on more on Brexit, Devolution and of course the Apprenticeship Reforms.

As many of you are aware we finished 2016 waiting on further information for Levy Payers from HMRC on the finer details of how the Levy will be processed from spring of this year. Details on how the Levy is to be paid has now been published, and can be accessed here.  The SFA expect the DAS Levy Account Registration to be available before the end of the month, and they are currently interacting with employers via digital services such as online blogs - you can access the DAS blog here

The new year is going to bring many challenges, to not only the sector but to the country, however it will also bring opportunities and I am sure you will agree with me that we need to be resilient, flexible and responsive to these opportunities in order to secure our future. Please visit here to read the New Year message from Apprenticeships and Skills Minister, Robert Halfon MP.

The Network will continue to support you throughout 2017, and will represent the training providers of Devon and Cornwall, locally, regionally and nationally. We will ensure that training, skills and education remain firmly on the agenda, and that we are included, and part of, any planned future developments here in the South West.

I am looking forward to working with you all in 2017 and in taking the Network into its next phase. If you would like to arrange a one-to-one meeting with me, or would like to see the Network offering something specific in terms of guest speakers at meetings, topics within the Digest or workshops to support staff CPD please do get in touch with me.

With best wishes

Prevent Duty...Do you Know Yours?
The government published the ‘Prevent’ strategy in 2011 as part of its overall counter terrorism strategy, CONTEST. Prevent duty guidance, which was first published in February 2015, was then put into place in the further education and skills sector on 18 September 2015.

As a result, all further education and skills providers in England must have ‘due regard’ to the need to ‘Prevent’ people from being drawn into terrorism. Therefore, 2015/16 is the first academic year of the duty being put into practice formally.

However, there have been a number of high profile cases in the media recently around the Prevent agenda, and these have highlighted the fact that there still appears to be a lack of awareness around the 'Duty to Prevent' by training providers. With Ofsted particularly interested in how providers are implementing and managing their Prevent Duty, it has become apparent that there is a need for further information sharing and peer support.

The Network is planning on offering a series of interactive Prevent workshops in partnership with Network Member ETS - these sessions will enable you to learn about and understand your statutory obligations in terms of Prevent, how to implement the correct processes and procedures to ensure an effective strategy, and the opportunity to receive support in completing your organisational risk assessment from trained Prevent facilitators. You will also hear from special guest speakers who will be able to place the Prevent agenda into context and will highlight just how important your role is as part of the government's Prevent strategy.

Delegates will be able to attend four Prevent workshops in the year - these will be held in February, May, July and November - dates to be confirmed shortly - and will be held as four full day sessions at the ETS offices in Exeter, between 9.00am - 3.30pm. Sessions will include refreshments, lunch and all learning materials.

This is a great  opportunity for training providers in Devon and Cornwall to receive high quality Prevent training without having to travel long distances to do so - we aim to offer just 30 spaces on our Prevent programme with two highly trained Prevent facilitators delivering at each session.
