To Do List
Reserve Section Rooms
The FAS Registrar’s online section-room request form is now available, so you should begin requesting classrooms for your sections. The Registrar’s Office will confirm section space requests starting on Friday, February 3rd, so sections can begin in the third week of the term. Please note that all sections must begin on the hour. The Registrar’s Office controls only about 30% of the classroom space on campus, so you may also want to look for rooms in your department or in the Houses. You can use the Buildings & Rooms List to identify spaces and the appropriate scheduler. Contact your course coordinator if you would like assistance identifying alternate spaces. See Teaching in Gen Ed to learn more about reserving rooms for section.

Learn about the Sectioning Tool Now
Be sure to learn how to use the sectioning tool before the Course Registration Deadline (Friday, January 27th), since there will no longer be any sectioning-tool training sessions or weekend/after-hours support. We encourage you to utilize the training resources in the my.harvard Knowledge Center, which has full documentation, demo videos and a downloadable guide. The Registrar’s Office will be holding walk-in labs at the following times:
  • Thursday, January 26th, 11-1
  • Monday, January 30th, 9-11
  • Tuesday, January 31st, 3-5
All sessions will be held in the large conference room on the fourth floor of the Smith Campus Center. Please note that these labs are designed to troubleshoot issues or answer specific questions; they are not training sessions. Participants will be expected to have already reviewed the Knowledge Center materials. Please contact the Registrar’s Office at 617-496-5212 or sectioning@fas.harvard.edu with any questions or concerns about the sectioning tool.

Make Sure Your Canvas Site is Published
Students have begun looking at courses in my.harvard, which links directly to course websites, so you should make sure that your course’s Canvas site is published as soon as possible. Contact the Academic Technology Group (ATG) for Canvas help.

Finalize an Abbreviated Syllabus for Start of Term
We encourage you to work with your faculty member to finalize an abbreviated syllabus. To promote “green classrooms” and reduce paper waste and excessive copying costs, Gen Ed has asked faculty to create an abbreviated syllabus to distribute to students during the first week of classes. The abbreviated syllabus should be limited to no more than a single page, which could be double-sided, and refer students to the full syllabus, posted on the Canvas website. See Creating a Shopping Week Syllabus to learn more or see examples of abbreviated syllabi. We regretfully are no longer able to support making copies of full syllabi.

Sign Up for Winter Teaching Week
The Bok Center's Winter Teaching Week runs from today through Friday. We strongly encourage you and your teaching staff to attend as many sessions as possible, regardless of your teaching experience.
  • Anyone teaching for the first time is also expected to attend the session on “Fundamentals of Teaching” (in the humanities and social sciences or in STEM courses) on Thursday, January 19th, 9am-2pm.
  • Anyone teaching in Gen Ed for the first time is expected to attend the "Teaching in Gen Ed" session on Friday, January 20th, 12-1:30pm.
  • Anyone who has not attended a Title IX training session for TFs in the past year is expected to attend the session that is being held on Friday, January 20th, 2-3:30pm.
RSVP online for any sessions you wish to attend.
Please encourage the members of your teaching staff to attend.

Declare Final Assessment
Course heads are asked to declare a final assessment for each course: a one-hour final exam, a three-hour final exam, a final paper, a take home final exam, or no assessment for the course. If your course head has not yet done this, you or your course head should complete the online form for declaring final assessments, available on the Registrar’s Office website (where you can also find information on exams and assessments). If a three-hour Registrar scheduled exam is selected, the course will be added to the Spring 2017 Final Exam Schedule, which will be posted sometime next month, and a classroom will be booked by the classrooms office.

Pick Up Your Desk Copies
Desk copies (complimentary copies of the required books for your course) are available for pick-up starting today. Please remind your teaching staff to visit your course coordinator or the front desk at the Gen Ed Office (Smith Campus Center, 4th floor) during regular business hours (Monday–Friday 9–5) to collect their books.
First Week of Classes
Classes Begin
Monday, January 23rd, is the first day of classes for the spring term.

Course Registration Deadline (formerly Study Card Day)
The Course Registration Deadline is Friday, January 27th. After that, you can view the updated enrollment list in my.harvard by using the Class Roster function. By Monday, January 30th, Gen Ed Director Stephanie Kenen will contact all Gen Ed course heads with information about section allocation changes. Course coordinators will follow up with course heads and TFs if there are any changes. Once your enrollment is finalized on the Course Registration Deadline, you may begin sectioning. Please note that sections typically begin the third week of classes.
Pedagogical Support
Practice Teaching Sessions (aka Microteaching)
Gen Ed's Pedagogy Fellows are available to facilitate practice-teaching sessions for your course staff or for individual TFs. If interested, please contact Gen Ed Associate Director Laura Hess.
