SOUTHSIDE PARTNERSHIP LAUNCHES ITS NEW WEBSITE

In order to help people get a better understanding of the wide range of supports and services available through the Partnership, we have developed a new website which has just been launched. The website covers all the activities of Southside Partnership, including the Local Employment Service and the Training Network.

Please check us out at
www.southsidepartnership.ie and we would welcome your feedback.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW CATHAOIRLEACH

Southside Partnership is honoured to have our Vice Chairperson, Cllr Cormac Devlin, elected as An Cathaoirleach of of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for the next year. Cormac also serves as a member of the Environment, Climate Change & Energy, and the Social Housing Strategic Policy Committees. He also serves on the Dun Laoghaire Area Committee, the Association of Irish Local Government, Dalkey Heritage Town Company, the Joint Policing Committee, the Board of the Mounttown Community Facility and, of course, on the Board of Southside Partnership DLR.

Cormac said he felt “honoured and privileged to be elected as Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown”. While he accepts that his new role comes with many “ceremonial aspects”, his major concerns currently are housing, local enterprise and opening up Dun Laoghaire County Hall to constituents. He said: “Having been a Councillor already for 12 years and seeing the role through various different Cathaoirligh, the pressing issue, obviously, is housing. “I’ve been a keen supporter of social housing throughout my time on the council so hopefully, now, we’ll see a number of schemes come to fruition in the short-term.”

Cormac is married to Jennifer and they have three young children. We wish him the very best as the first citizen of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown.

DLR HARM OF ALCOHOL WORKSHOP

This project has been developed by the DLR Drug & Alcohol Taskforce (DATF) and aims to reduce the harm of alcohol within the DLR area. It consists of 4 main areas of work which include:

  • ‘You Are What You Drink’ workshop – This workshop has been piloted amongst many community workers and is now available for all community groups.
        Upcoming workshops:
Thursday, 14 July, 10:30am - Ballybrack (Scouts Den)
Thursday, 21 July, 10:30am - Cabinteely - Parish Hall beside church
Wednesday, 7 September, 7:30pm - Foxrock Parish Centre
Wednesday, 14 September, time TBC - Springboard, Loughlinstown
        Wednesday, October 12th, 10.30am - Ballyogan
  • Youth Consultation – This initiative is for youth workers and teachers to engage with young people about the topic of alcohol. It aims to bring about individual and group changes in their awareness and attitudes towards alcohol. This will involve many schools carrying out a project competition around the topic of ‘Alcohol – an issue in our Community’ and a visual competition piece amongst many youth groups.
  • Social Media Campaign (with Brief Intervention Information) – The aim is to design and implement a social media  campaign to spread a public health message on alcohol. A sub-group of the DATF has been set-up to support this work.
  • Alcohol Awareness Events – A collaborative series of events which would include fun activities and an educational element to help promote further awareness of alcohol and it’s effects on individual, family and public health. The events will be held in November – week TBC

If you are interested in hosting a ‘You Are What You Drink’ workshop and/or finding out more about the project, please contact Elaine on 083 844 4061 or elaine.o’mahony@sspship.ie

WOMEN4WOMEN - POWER IN PARTICIPATION

Women4women and Southside Partnership DLR hosted a one day women’s workshop on 2 June, in Fitzpatrick's Castle Hotel, Killiney, with the theme of “Power in Participation”.  There were 20 women in attendance with good diversity in ethnicity, age and agency.  There were women from the Muslim community, the Traveller community, two Family Resource Centres (Balally and Hillview), SWAN, and others from the community and voluntary sector.  Such diversity made for interesting discussions about their experiences in participation, the successes and obstacles they’ve faced as they’ve participated, and how DLR could benefit from further participation from them as women.
