JOB SHADOW DAY 2016
A highlight during National Supported Employment Week 2016 was Job Shadow Day on 27th April. In its 9th year, Job Shadow Day is a national day of awareness to promote equal employment opportunities for people with disabilities, and gives employers the opportunity to express their commitment to inclusion in the workplace.

Southside Partnership DLR was delighted to host 3 placements in Mounttown, in our Care & Repair project and in Holly House.  Our participants, Ciara, Catherine and Suzanne, all had a full day of work activities and obtained a great insight into their respective work environments and, as you can see from the photos, both participants and staff really enjoyed the experience and had a great day.

Our staff in both Care and Repair and Holly House provide work experience opportunities on a regular basis for individuals linked with St John of God, and it was wonderful to take part in this national event.

‘This is an important event which highlights the valuable contribution people with disabilities can make to the workplace.’  - Lisa Walsh, Employment Coordinator

'Huge success! We were delighted to have Catherine. She lit up everyone's day!' - Tim Reidy, Tús Team Leader, Care & Repair.

Last year, close to 800 individuals with a disability shadowed over 500 employment sites in Ireland, with 55 securing a permanent job placement as a direct result.  This year over 1,000 jobseekers took part.

For more information on Job Shadow Day visit the IASE (Irish Association of Supported Employment) website  www.iase.ie

We would like to take this opportunity to thank RehabCare for their involvement in this event.

AGE FRIENDLY STRATEGY FOR DUN LAOGHAIRE
The Age Friendly Strategy for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown was launched at an event in County Hall on 4th May.  Our CEO, Cormac Shaw, is a member of the Age Friendly Alliance, which coordinated the development of the strategy over the past 12 months, and which will continue to oversee its implementation. Individuals, active retirement groups, service providers and local organisations all contributed to the development of the strategy.

As part of the process, nine themes were used as a basis to consider what improvements could be made to ensure that our county is ‘an Age Friendly place’.  These themes are based on the World Health Organisation’s Age Friendly Cities programme, as follows:
1.    Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
2.    Transportation
3.    Housing
4.    Social Participation
5.    Respect and Social Inclusion
6.    Civic Participation and Employment
7.    Communication and Information
8.    Community Support and Health Services
9.    Safety and Security
“Working with our Age Friendly Alliance members, we now have a real opportunity to deliver on the Strategy aims, and make some real improvements which will enhance community wellbeing and the qualify of life of our older citizens and genuinely make our county a great place in which to grow old”
Philomena Poole,
Chief Executive, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council

The full strategy can be viewed here, or copies are available directly from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

LAUNCH OF THE DLR LOCAL ECONOMIC & COMMUNITY PLAN
2016 – 2021
The new Local economic and Community Plan (LECP) for the county was officially launched at an event held in Airfield House, Dundrum on 28th April by An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Barry Saul. The LECP is the culmination of many months of work by all those involved
and follows an extensive consultation process with local community groups and organisations, ensuring that the actions in this plan are underpinned by local voices. Its vision is to create a strong vibrant county that is committed to being inclusive and providing a high quality of life for all its citizens.

Southside Partnership played a leading role in the development of the community elements of the plan.
Some of the key actions to be developed in 2016 include:
  • Support for target groups  in the county through the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP)
  • Development of a new Children’s Services Committee
  • New Age Friendly Strategy for the County
  • New LEADER Programme in the rural part of the county
