December 2016  |  Supervisor of Training Enewsletter

A Message from the Office

2016 saw the introduction of many new faces - with 19 new Fellows being appointed as Supervisors of Training. As a part of further learning and training, the College also conducted Supervisor of Training Workshops in Australia. Facilitated by Dr Bronwyn Avard and A/Prof Bruce Lister, 48 Supervisors attended workshops this year and participated in sessions on providing feedback and remediation techniques for poorly performing trainees.

Feedback from the workshops was very positive with the role playing, interactive discussions, and Q&A sessions being well received. The workshops were a valuable networking tool for Supervisors (especially Supervisors from rural areas) and provided an opportunity for Supervisors to ask questions about the current curriculum. The College would like to say a very big thank you to Bronwyn Avard and Bruce Lister for conducting these workshops and look forward to having them on board again in 2017. The College has proposed the following locations for 2017 Supervisor workshops;
  • Melbourne
  • Brisbane
  • New Zealand (location to be confirmed)
Final dates and registration information will be advertised on the website and in the e-News early in the New Year.

From all of the aff at the College, thank you again for your hard work and support to our trainees this year and we wish you a pleasant break over the holiday period.

Christmas Closing Hour

The College will be closed from Friday 23 December -
returning to work on Tuesday 3 January 2017.

Changes to the Selection of Trainees

At the recent November Board Meeting, it was agreed that changes to the current Trainee Selection Policy will be introduced.
From the first round of applications in 2017 (applications close on April 30 2017- see below):

  • The number of references required will be increased to three with the extra one coming from a senior ICU nurse;
  • The process for collecting references will be changed (applicants will nominate their referees and the College will request the reference directly from the referee);
  • The number of registration intake dates will be reduced from four to two.
In addition the College will trial:
  • A  new structured CV that will eventually allow points to be awarded for various achievements and experience;
  • Introduction of situational judgement tests (most likely on line) that applicants will complete as part of the selection process
Taken together, these measures will allow the College to develop a process that in the future will allow it to rank applicants to the training program in order of merit. It is envisaged that an educationalist will be involved to assist with this project.

The intention is that all applicants in 2017 will play a part in the trial. The submitted documentation will be assessed, however any scores will be for internal use and will not influence selection on to the training program.

The following dates have been chosen to coincide with trainees applying to sit the first part exam:
  • April 30 2017 (can apply to sit second sitting 2017)
  • October 31 2017 (can apply to sit first sitting 2018)

A letter outlining the changes in more detail will be sent to all Supervisors of Training in the coming weeks. If you have any concerns in the meantime please don’t hesitate to contact Daniel Angelico at daniel@cicm.org.au or the College Office.

Medicine Rotations

The Training Department has recently seen an increase of queries regarding medicine rotations. On the current curriculum 6 months of medicine training must be acute medicine (which may be in an Emergency Department) and 6 months must involve responsibility for longitudinal care of medical patients. At least 6 months should be undertaken in a registrar position.

While it is expected that trainees secure their medicine rotations in conjunction with the College Regulations, the College is more than happy for Supervisors to contact the Training Department about the suitability of a medicine rotation. Trainees are also strongly encouraged to contact the College if they have any questions about the suitability of a position.

Supervisor of Training Survey Summary

Thank you to all Supervisors who participated in our most recent feedback survey. Of 164 Supervisors invited to participate, 99 responses were received, this was a total of 60.36%. Based on your responses, the following observations were made;

Champion Supervisors of Training

As a part of the Supervisor Of Training survey, all supervisors were asked if they were prepared to become a ‘Champion’ in their region for new supervisors who require advice/support.

Topics you may wish to approach a champion supervisor about might be: trainee welfare, dealing with difficult conversations, time management, and overall general advice for a novice supervisor.

Please refer to the table in the link below for your nearest champion supervisor.

If you would like to contact one of the listed supervisors, or are interested in becoming a champion supervisor please contact Caitlin Gheller, caitling@cicm.org.au for further details.
